          Balanced Diet

             A balanced diet is one that fulfills all of a person's nutritional  needs. Balanced diet is good for our physical and mental health. It can reduced the risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and depression. 
           A balanced diet contains the proper quantities and proportions of needed nutrients to maintain good health such as carbohydrates,fats, fibers, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. We should add fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and oils to our diet. Different food items have different proportions of nutrients present in them. The requirement of nutrients depends upon age, gender and health of a person. 


  Qualities of balanced diet 

1) Full of proteins-  Balanced diet is full of proteins and minerals. These nutrients are helpful in the growth of our body. Some nutrients improve body's resistance to disease. We can obtain different nutrients from different types of food. 

2) Containing Protective Nutrients -  A balanced diet contains protective nutrients. Vitamin A, B, C, D, E & K are protective nutrients. They protect us from diseases and keep our body and mind healthy. 

3) Provides enough energy -  Balanced diet also provides enough energy to to our body. Some part of our energy requirements is fulfilled by fat. Fats can be found in butter, ghee, milk and oils etc. Carbohydrates also provide energy and it can be found in rice, bread, wheat & potatoes etc.  

4- Based on age & gender -  Balanced diet of a person depends on his/her age, gender  occupation and climate. Different kinds of people need a different balanced diet. It wouldn't be same for two different persons.

    A balanced diet may be defined as the diet which contains all the nutrients in correct amount.Different Quality and different quantity of diet is required for different persons.Diet of a person depends on various factors. some common but important factors are —
1) Age                                2) Occupation
3) Gender                         4) Climate 
5) Health                          6) Body built
7) Special conditions

1)Age - Our requirement for food mainly depends on our age. A child needs more fats and proteins for proper growth of body. An old person doesn't need much fat as in old age the digestion becomes weak. 

2) Occupation -  Some persons do hard physical work such as labour, carpenter & athlete. They need more fats and carbohydrates  as a they lose a big amount of energy in their daily routine. Such persons need more quantity of food to fulfill this lose of energy. Many people do hard mental work such as lawyer, engineer,doctor and teacher. Such persons need more proteins than carbohydrates. 

3) Gender -  Balanced diet depends on the gender of a person. Physical structure and activities of males and females are not same so female needs less calories and less amount of food than male. 

4) Climate - Our diet depends upon the climate in which we live. people live in hot climate need less amount of fats & proteins. They should take light food in hot climate and  in summers.  Persons live in cold climate need more quantity of fats and proteins. 

5) Health -  Healthy persons need more nutrients than unhealthy persons. They perform a lot of physical activities so their requirement of a balanced diet is also different. The persons recovering from illness need more proteins  minerals and vitamins to repair the damage caused by illness. 

6- Body built - Our body weight is also a major determining factor of balanced diet. Overweight person should take a diet which is rich in fibers while lean or slim person needs more proteins and fats. 

7) Special conditions- There are some special conditions in which a human body needs extra diet and more amount of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins & minerals.A pregnant lady, feeding mother, a person recovering from illness or surgery need extra nutrients.
