Poison
Any substance which can cause severe organ damage or death is called a poison or toxin. Poisons are often lifeless substances. They can reach inside the body from mouth, by inhalation, through the bites and stings of poisonous animals. Poisons can be in the form of solid, liquid and vapour(gas form of substances) .
Kinds, symptoms & treatment of Oral intake poisons
i) Narcotic Poisons – Opium, hemp charas & marfiya are the examples of Narcotic poisons.
Symptoms :
i) headache and dozing. Eyes red and half opened.
ii) The face turns pale & the body becomes cold as soon as it's effect becomes stronger.
iii) Excessive intake of such poisons may cause death.
iv) Slow breathing and irregular pulse rate.
Remedy
i) Solution of barley flour or concentrate salt solution may be given for vomiting.
ii) Give lemon and tamarind juice after vomiting.
iii) Keep the body of the patient warm.
iv) If there is any difficulty in breathing then give artificial breathing.
ii) Irritant Poisons – Arsenic, mercury, powdered glass and blue vitriol are Irritant Poisons.
Symptoms :
i) A person feels burning sensation and pain in mouth, throat, gullet, stomach and in intestines.
ii) Lips become whitish and yellowish. Thirst increases.
iii) Body becomes cold and urine stops.
iv) Vomiting and loose motion starts.
Remedy
i) Give sufficient milk to drink.
ii) Give lime or chalk for drinking.
iii) A big spoon of Castor oil or Olive oil may also be used for drinking.
iv) Keep the body warm with the help of blankets.
iii) Corrosive Poisons – Caustic soda, Ammonia, Carbolic acid, mineral acid or inorganic acid are the example of Corrosive Poisons.
Symptoms :
i) Corrosive poisons are very troublesome. They make wounds in the throat, tongue, mouth and stomach.
ii) A person who has taken such poisons may face difficulty in breathing.
iii) Patient becomes senseless.
iv) Pulse rate goes slow and skin becomes cold.
Remedy
i) Give tamarind juice, lemon juice or vinegar with some water to the patient.
ii) Mix some pure ghee in milk and give it to the patient for drinking.
iii) Don't allow the patient to sleep.
iv) Keep the body of the patient warm.
iv) Nerve Poisons – Wine (शराब), thornapple ( धतूरा) and chloroform are the examples of Nerve poisons.
Symptoms :
i) These poisons effect brain and nervous system.
ii) It's effect make a person unconscious or senseless.
iii) Paralysis can also occur on any part of the body.
iv) Tongue and legs are stagger.
v) Eyes turns red and pupils flat.
Remedy
i) Give tamarind or lemon juice to the patient.
ii) Do not allow the patient to sleep.
iii) If a patient is senseless, sprinkle water on face and head.
iv) Give ammonia to smell.
v) When the patient is come into sense give warm milk to drink.
vi) Let him rest in an airy place.
SYMPTOMS OF POISONING
i) We can recognize the type of poison from empty bottles and wrapper of the tablets. We should try to find out these things nearby the patient.
ii) We should examine the lips of the patient. If the colour of the lips turns blue or black then it indicates about the poison.
iii) We can also recognize the type of poison through the bad smell of patient's breath.
iv) We should check the pockets of the patient's clothes. Any written note or letter may also tell us about the poison.
v) Pupils of the eyes may be spread or shrink due to the effect of poison,so this is the another way of knowing about the poison.
vi) Unconsciousness of the patient also gives the information about the type of poison.
Precautions regarding poison's treatment
i) Take the patient to the doctor immediately.
ii) Enforce vomiting. It is the first treatment.
iii) If irritant poison has been taken then vomiting is strictly prohibited.
iv) Do not allow the patient to sleep if he/she has taken narcotic poison.
v) Use lemon juice and vinegar in the case of alkaline poisoning.
vi) Provide artificial breathing if required.
vii) Try to keep the body of the patient warm in cold weather.
How can we prevent ourselves from the accidents caused by poison
A person can take poison if he doesn't have any knowledge of the bad & harmful effects of poison. If anyone is not aware about the correct dose of medicines then it is also harmful To avoid the accidents caused by any type of poison we should follow some rules.
i) Paste a label with name on the bottles of all substances which are poisonous but we use them at our homes.
ii) Keep all the disinfectants away from the reach of children.
iii) It is our duty to provide necessary information about the disinfectants, kerosene oil, acids & alkaline to our children when they grew up.
iv) Never use expired medicines. Do not keep them in the home.
v) Keep all the medicines in their original packet, bottle or box.
vi) Do not use any medicine at dark place. There should be proper light in a room when we have to give any medicine to the patient.
vii) some medicines have different types of side effects so ask the doctor first before taking or giving a medicine.
Antidote or Anti Toxins
Anti dote means a medicine or any other remedy that is used for counteracting the effects of poison or a disease. The word Anti-Dote derived from the Greek word Antidoton which means "given as a remedy". An antidote relieves the negative effects of something. We should have the knowledge of different antidotes and their use. The main kinds of anti toxins are as follows –
1) General
2) Anti- body
3) Chemicals
1) General - Milk, olive oil or Castor oil are given to get the poison out of the patient's body by vomiting.
2) Anti- body - When there is any change appears in patient's body such as twisting and staggering then levitate are given to smell.
3) Chemicals - i) Tannic acid for arsenic.
ii) Sodium sulphate for snake poison.
iii) Acetic acid for corrosive poison.
iv) Lime for oxalic acid
v) Tincher iodine for quinine.
some fruits and spices are also used to reduce the effect of poison and they work as an antidote. Some of them them are lemon, onion, salt, vinegar and olive oil etc.
